Killed my sourdough starter, need help

Profile picture for user ibakebread

Hi everyone

After 2.5 years of taking care of my sourdough starter, I accidentally left my starter in the oven and turned it on to bake some lasagne. Sadly I recognized after 30 min. My starter is cooked fully :(

So I was wondering if someone has a dried starter they can send me in an envelope? I live in California.

Thanks

It's not a "tangy" San Francisco type of starter, but it's vigorous.  It grows well, even in the fridge.  I feed it mostly whole wheat, and it seems to like it.

Hi Hi........so if you baked your culture in the oven......bake it till its totally dry......put it in a blender and make fine powder from it.......then if you bake any bread...just add 20% culture powder to the mix......it will taste amazing....

I'm sorry. I hope you've learned the important lesson never to put your "mother" starter in the oven! I suggest you drop by a local bakery, restaurant, or pizzeria and ask for a bit of their starter; many will probably be happy to help. Or if there's a neighborhood mailing list, you can ask your neighbors. If all else fails, you can buy starter from King Arthur.
