I have been feeding my starters twice a week as it is a fairly new starter. I missed a couple of days and when I checked my rye one this morning it looked like this. The first pic shows how I store it in the fridge. I'm hoping it's just a bit dried out.
Feed the healthy looking starter below and if it bubbles up and smells ok then it's fine.
If it looks like a starter, smells like starter and behaves like a starter then it's fine.
Thanks, that's what I've done. The underneath looked ok if a little runny. Will wait and see but it smelt right.
You'll find the runnier it gets. So that's normal. don't worry about that. Like Brian said below, perhaps for storage a proper lid? I loosely close the screw top lid on my starter while maturing at room temperature but for storage in the fridge i'll close it tighter once I know the pressure won't build up too much. Keep the starter from drying out.
That’s how I store mine when feeding, but for refrigerated storage use a real lid to prevent that drying out.
