Bread Baking Group in Detroit

Toast

Are there fellow bread bakers in the Detoit Metro area?  Other cities have groups that get together occasionally to compare notes and eat some great bread.  Has a group formed or is anyone potentially interested?

But I'm a hop, skip and jump away from the Straits of Mackinac, Bill, in the snow belt of Michigan.

I envy your proximity to Zingerman's.  When the snow melts in April, I hope to get down there for their Power of Flour class.

Wasn't aware of that class...just checked it out on their web site.  That sounds like a great class...a little pricey but interesting.

I'm in Troy, and love baking.  Have a loaf in the oven as we speak.  Any great spots to buy baking supplies?  I have searched via Google but have come up empty, other than the standards.  I've tried talking a cake supply shop into carrying baking stuff, flour, etc., but no luck.

Have you checked out Gordon Food Services?

A great source for inexpensive parchment and other baking supplies.  Unfortunately, up here in Northern Michigan they only carry bleached flours; not sure what's available downstate.

LindyD, have you found the Cambro 6Qt. dough containers w/ lids 2 for about $12?  they normally go for 1 @ $10.00

Only a GFS.

Hi Mty,

I like Bulk Foods stores (they are called Bulk Food).  There are two near me on the east side one on Harper in St. Clair Shores and another in Clinton Twp, I believe.  They carry a nice variety of flours, seeds, nuts, etc in bulk.  I like it because I can buy only what I need and don't have to worry about stuff getting stale.

Hi Mike, I love Cambro.  I have a set (3) of the two-quart and one-quart containers.  I use them for measuring flour and water.  GFS sells them at a bargain price for certain.

Will check out the six quart on my next trip. Their caraway and other seeds are sold at great prices, too.
