Long Hiatus & A solution if you run out of yeast

Back at The Fresh Loaf after a long hiatus from Baking. No oven for many years, long story, recently remedied. So happily I am baking again and very happy about it I might add!

A couple of days ago we were out of bread and because we live in San Francisco, on shelter in place instructions I thought "Say, I have an oven now, why don't I bake some?" Which was genius except that I was out of yeast, and so are the stores. But I had another genius idea and posted a request on Nextdoor asking if anyone in my neighbourhood had a sourdough starter. Within ten minutes I had an offer for starter and that evening we had accomplished  a clean transfer. Himself carried home the baggie of white goo and handed it off. The donor had taped baggies onto a telephone pole by his house where anyone who wanted one could pick it up.

Fed Starter on the counter and the next thing I did is log in here to refresh myself on handling sourdough. It's been awhile and I was never a huge success at San Francisco's favorite loaf. The advice here was helpful as always.

Very happy with the 2 loaves I have produced, and I want to encourage anyone who runs out of yeast during these difficult times to reach out to neighbours for help!

What a wonderful story . Perhaps I should do the same thing .  We are at the epicenter and the shop shelves have sold out of flour!
