Does anyone in this forum know where I can buy Rye Flour in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area? I have been using it for my starter because it works so well, but buying it on-line is way too expensive. Any help is appreciated, thanks ;-)
I suggest that you start your search by looking for Hodgson Mill Rye at your nearby Walmart. I have no idea what size they carry there but they usually start with a three pound or so bag. Walmart on line may have larger quantities available and will deliver to your local Walmart. Kroger affiliate supermarkets in the KC area carry Bob's Red Mill rye flour and sometimes Hodgson Mill rye flour. They may be worth looking into in your area. Finally, if you have an Amazon Prime membership, you should be able to get free shipping on 25# bags of organic rye from Green River.
Thanks for the responses, I have been buying the Bob's Red Mills organic Rye for $3.77 lb from Walmart.com but that's still pretty expensive IMO. I guess I'm just spoiled being able to buy 5 lbs of King Arthur Bread flour from Wal-Mart and not being able to find Rye flour anywhere close to that price. I'm going to try the Hodgson Mill Rye on Amazon at $12.14 for 5 lbs, the 25 lb bag of Great River on Amazon would be the best price but I don't think I'd be able to go through that much before it went bad.
Central Market carries Bob's Red Mill Dark Rye Flour (22 oz size). This is what I use for my starter. They also carry Arrowhead Mills rye as well. Bob's Rye at CM is probably $3.50.
Depending on what flour you need, you might be able to stock up on flour from Vitacost. They carry pretty much all of Bob's flour varieties. The Rye is among the cheapest I've found, and there is usually a coupon.

Thanks, I'll have to go over to Central Market, at a $1.49 lb it is definitely the best value! I really don't use that much in my bread, I use it primarily for my starter and every now and then mix some in with my bread flower.
Even though usually it's not a place that offers bargains.??? I found Giusto's whole rye flour in its bulk section yesterday for ?1️⃣.4️⃣9️⃣ / lb, but I'm in California.
Hi Jim, I'm in DFW and I get whole organic rye berries from Natural Grocers for about $.90/lb. I'm pretty sure they have milled rye too, but I don't remember the price. Look for it in the cooler section. That is the cheapest I have found all over DFW and believe me, I checked everywhere.
You're welcome! I believe the one in Fort Worth carries dark rye flour in their store brand packages, either in the cooler section or in the section with all the Natural Grocers packs of spices, flours, grains, etc.
Excellent! I love that little store. They ordered special for me too (50lb bag of whole organic red wheat), as long as it's in their assortment. Happy Baking!

In the spirit of deal hunting... Arrowhead Mills Rye is $2.40 before tax on Amazon... comes out to 12c/oz, which is cheaper than the 5lb sack
My local Central Market carries bulk Rye Flour (the source changes on occasion, but it usually is Arrowhead). It is $1.49/lb (9c/oz).
In my experience, I haven't found it cheaper in the area or online than at Central Market. There are probably half a dozen stores in DFW.

Yippee
Thanks, and yes I've checked a couple Whole Foods in the Dallas Ft. Worth area and neither one of them had any rye flour at all, which surprised me.
I'm not sure about your area, but in mine ive found dark rye at the local earth mart in the bulk bins. $1.39/lb. Maybe it's in your local mart.
And amen that stuff makes starter go crazy. Good luck!
Thanks, but I just googled earth mart and earthy mart, nothing came up? Guess there's no stores close to me;-(
Happy Earth Day!
Hey, I didn't mean literally that name. I just mean an organic grocer. Looks like you've got a lead on one below. Sweet! Good luck.
LOL, yeah I found one, thanks!

Good looking out. We just started buying our eggs from there... I'll have to look for flour now too!

Thanks, I'll be going to the Ft. Worth store this weekend, I really appreciate the feed back ;-)
Found the Rye Flour at the Natural Grocers in North Ft. Worth, $1.99 for a 2lb bag!
Thanks again :-)
