Sharpening razor blade

Profile picture for user Felila

I have one double-edged razor blade left, for scoring my loaves. I haven't gotten a round tuit to buy more. I took a hint from a long-ago sojourn in a third-world country and started sharpening my razor blade on my whetstone. Seems to work well, for a kludge.

You should be able to put a keen edge on a double edged blade, but doing so seems awfully dangerous.

How do you hold the blade when sharpening? I’m thinking you could safely hold the blade in the jaws of a pair of forceps.

I use an old school straight razor and really like it. I sharpen it from time to time, but after each use I strop it on a peace of paper towel. The results using the paper towel is excellent and keeps the edge scary sharp.

Great idea.

I hold the blade in the middle and bend it a little to get a tight contact with the whetstone.

A old-fashioned straight-edge shaving razor, were I able to afford one, would be a great idea.

Recommended razor not available on Amazon. I looked for a replacement and found one that looked good, for a reasonable price ... to be told that it could not be shipped to Honolulu. I do not not know why Honolulu is such an unshippable location. I keep running into that. Amazon would not let me buy one kind of batteries ... but let me buy others. Will keep looking. It does seem that I could get a cheap straight-edge if I could get find one that was available and shippable.

Paul is right, they are readily available. If you can try to get a beak point, or Spanish point configuration on the end of the blade at the tip. I think it might work a little better than the others.

Here is a similar version that is available.

Check out the points on both razors I linked. It seems they will penetrate better and drag less.

Looks good. I will have to pass on this right now; my roommate is moving out and I will be poor until I find another one. Spent the last month's rent deposit on fixing my twenty-three-year-old car. Being poor is careening from one catastrophe to another :(

But if I can just make it through the next two months ... At least I have flour :)

Pawn shops and flea markets are a good source for razors as long as you have sharpening skills..

I paid less than a dollar for the one in the middle, it's what I use in all my baking. The other two were gifts and work well but probably cost a bit more.
