I just got a new KitchenAid Professional 600 mixer and I was pretty shocked at how much it seemed to struggle with its first batch of bread dough. See short video at https://youtu.be/TRWC31lvgUc
Is this normal for this model?
As you can hear, it bogs down then speeds up. It’s on the recommended 2 setting. It got pretty hot after 8 minutes. Also, the bowl and arms seem to move a lot.
I had a 35 year old KitchenAid K5SS that never struggled with anything.
Thanks!
How much dough is in there?
1 loaf - about 3 1/2 cups flour.
not look or sound good to me. I'd consider checking the manual to see if its aligned correctly, make sure that the bowl is well seated and locked into place and if nothing helps then I would seek a replacement. I have a much wimpier model than yours and it works smoothly even with a heavy load in it.
Before getting too involved in repairs/exchange, try running it without any dough in it to see if the noise disappears.
BobBoule: Yes, bowl was properly seated and everything was aligned.
Old Baker: It runs noisy all the time which I don't mind but it bogged down similarly just mixing dough.
I've decided to return the mixer and rebuild my ancient KitchenAid K5SS.
Thanks for your responses!
I bought a "new" kitchenaid mixer (relatively new-obviously used only 1 or 2 times and repackaged) at a local thrift store. I believe the store it was returned to then donated it to the thrift store. When I plugged it in and ran it before buying, it made a gd-awful grinding noise. My Mr.Fixit was with me and said -"BUY" so I did -for $15. He opened it up and the blob of grease dropped on the gears as they went through the automated line had totally missed its target and everything was running dry. Thankfully, nothing was broken and a new blob of proper grease placed where it belonged rendered it a new machine for $15! Works great!
A lot of "How to" fix Kitchenaid mixers is on YouTube. Parts available on ebay. Proper grease (food safe) still used and a bit pricey but lasts a lifetime.
I still have my 40 yr old K5SS. Works great with all manner of dough. Has been re-lubed once. Great machine.
