Hey, guys!
During my last pizza party I must have spilt some olive oil onto my baking stone. As I was getting ready to bake my ciabattas on it this morning, the oil caused quite a lot of smoke coming out of the oven. There is really only a couple of spots on the stone, but I can clearly see that the smoke comes off of these spots.
Have you had any similar experiences, or do you know anything as to how I best can wash it off/remove it from the baking stone?
Washing usually is not a good solution. The best is to put it on an outdoor grill at a temp that is high enough to burn it all off ( 500 F or so ) - but warm it up slowly so that it doesn't crack.
Your baking stone will probably have some cosmetic damage, but the oil will eventually burn off. I've spilt oil on my stone I can't tell you how many times, and although it gets smoky at first and leaves some scars, it's no big deal.
Happy baking !
I leave my well used (with scars to show for it!) in the oven, and when I put it on auto clean, that takes care of everything. Can come out looking like new. If that is a feature of your oven, it may work for you too.
but if you want it back to pristine, and I can vouch for this, leave it in your oven during the self clean cycle. Mine came out looking brand new!
ETA: Kaydee beat me to it! I guess I should read all the way down the thread before posting!
