Having fun with charcoal powder

Toast

My husband is organizing an event (a LARP for those well versed in geek speak!) and asked me to make breads that 'looked kinda weird'.

Behold! My charcoal powder sourdough bread, Tim Burton inspired.

Beautiful!... and perfect for the occasion.

And used all purpose unbleached flour (since i wanted the bread to be as black as possible) and added 3tbsp of bamboo charcoal powder at the begining, before the autolyse.

The powder is really hard to manage and I found its best to mix it with the flour before addding the water, else it wont mix correctly. I also found it made the dough a bit dryer so i went for a slightly more hydrated dough (about 78%).

Maybe a slight metallic aftertaste but once you add something on the bread, you cant really discern it.

Its pitch black inside, making it very unsettling to bite into!

I had a picture of the inside of one of my test loaves, ill try to find it!

Okay, that's really weird! What kind of role play are we talking about here? :)

They are in Limbo and the breads are supposed to be made with the ashes of destroyed souls (or something geeky like that), hence the black (well, greyish in my latest batch) breads.

Congrats on such an intentionally awful looking loaf of bread!  :) Beautiful shaping!

might give you some extra blackness, if you need to make soul-eating loaves. LOL
