Well, if you search on this site you will find all kinds of methods, information and advice, but basically keep it clean (i.e. don't introduce nasty things into your culture), feed it and keep it in the fridge when you're not using it. Other than that, pick your method and ingredients!
helps a lot too:-) Almost impossible to kill, these things, Mine has been gong sine 1973 and i have tried every way you can think of short of a small nuclear device and nothing kills it dead forever.
They have been around on this earth of billions of years longer than us and will be here long after we are gone.
If you want it to die..then you MUST die before it does !! I have had mine going for about 5 years. I opened it up the other day and it was covered with a thick layer of MOLD !! What ?? I quickly peeled it all back and some extra besides. I scooped out about q Tbsp full from 2 different places and placed each in a clean container. I then fed each rye flour and filtered water...I did this 2x in 4 hrs. Put it in a warm oven .When I got up the next day all was healthy and sweet and full of bubbles. Dab is right. Treat it right...more or less ...and you will be rewarded.
A key element is too keep it stiff. The wetter it is the more likely it will get "hooch" on top from hunger. I am often gone for months on cycling trips. I add enough rye flour to make a very very stiff dough. I seal it in a bag and a plastic box. When I come home I take it all out and submerge in warm water. When it is soft I feed it . I then take all the extra and make waffles and we are back to about a cup of healthy starter. Easy peasy. c
