Thinking about buying a Brod & Taylor proofer

Toast

Hello all,

So, I am thinking of taking the plunge and purchasing a folding proofer. I want to use for proofing and for making large batches of yogurt. I'm hoping it will be an improvement over the put-the-dough-in-a-warm-oven method (and the make-one-quart-of-yogurt-at-a-time-using-a-yogurt-maker method)

That said, it is pretty expensive and I live in Israel, so the shipping is another extra cost. I've seen several TFL posts (and Amazon reviews) that have mentioned that their Brod&Taylor proofer broke. This worries me because if I am going to make such an investment, I want it to last for a good long time. I don't know if I'll be able to get it serviced in Israel if something happens to it.

So, can users of a Brod&Taylor chime in about the longevity of the proofer?

Thanks!

Boaz

Hi Boaz,

I haven't had my Brød and Taylor proofer long enough to know whether they have a long track-record, but I don't think there is either (a) much that can go wrong with them, or (b) any parts which are likely to be serviceable.

I suppose there is a risk that a heating element could fail, but given the low temperature at which these run, probably not much of a risk at all.

The Brød and Taylor does make fantastic yoghurt.  I use it to make a number  individual servings in glass jars, rather than big containers, and for individual jars the second shelf would be really helpful.

Hope that all goes well if you decide to go ahead and purchase one.

Best wishes and happy culturing(!) Colin

Four years and it is an excellent dough proofer and I have used it to make cheese with excellent results.  Never broke.  What's to break?  It's a simple device.

I have also had one of these for several years, and it gets frequent use. I have had it going for over 12 hours at a time many times. It is especially useful in the Winter, when the kitchen is cool and when you are fermenting something that is very temperature-dependent.

If you are concerned about service and/or warranties, contact the manufacturer.

It is a great product and I use mine a lot.  There's nothing to dislike about it

I've had mine for about a year and a half, and I can't recommend it highly enough. I live in Vermont, and I keep my starter at room temp for twice-a-day feedings -- something that would be near impossible during Winter here without my Brod & Taylor. I keep it on 24 hours a day, for months at a time, and I've had no problems whatsoever. I've moved it cross-country twice and it's held up to the beating just fine.

To say I love this thing would be a huge understatement.

Simple. Durable. Easy to use. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Cheers!
