Pate fermentee

I have been rushing to finish a quilt and haven't baked since last week. The quilt is nearly done and I just couldn't stand it another minute - I started the pate fermentee (I LOVE those words!) to make the PR Pane Siciliano. I made it when I first bought the book and managed to overbake the loaves. They tasted good but looking back I don't think the dough was right. Probably not proofed long enough which is one of the things I have learned here. One of the neighbors is having an open house on Saturday and if the loaves are presentable I will take one with me. May have to trudge throught the snow which is forecast, brrrrrr. A.

Wow, what a beauty - but very complex. Do you use triangles on a roll? I find that if I work on a quilt while I'm baking bread it helps me to leave the dough alone to do what it needs to, where otherwise I tend to try to rush things along. Also keeps me out of the bars and off the streets! Glad to meet another baker/quilter, A.

I'm not using triangles on a roll. In fact, the basic block is very simple. It is a slight variation on the [i]Ocean Waves[/i] block, with a diagonal set and a little piecing on the inner border to help create the overall pattern.

I like to use traditional patterns and explore rearranging them to make a different overall effect. I also like to explore color so I generally work with solid fabrics rather than prints.

I think you are way too modest - that really looks like a complicated pattern to me. Is it for you to keep or for a gift? I spent most of today putting the binding on the second of four quilts I am making for great nieces and nephews in England. Today happens to be my birthday and I was feeling quite neglected as my family were away for Christmas and won't be back until Tuesday at the earliest. So it was so nice to find a note from a fellow loafer! I had planned on baking but then I read Rosalie's comment about eating the bread in the freezer and my conscience won out. Tomorrow is another day and I fed my starter a few minutes ago ready to make Susan's Sourdough. No, I didn't empty the freezer! A.

Thank you so much, Paddyscake! I guess I was being Poor Pitiful Annie because it is a big one this time and I was quite surprised to have made it. But as we say in my over 55 community, better than the alternative! I did buy myself all of the available Elizabeth David books and got a note to say the bread and yeast one has been shipped at last, yay. I have dipped into the others and look forward to some serious reading. Baking tomorrow will help me get over my snit and I can't wait to see my grandaughters. Thanks again for the greeting, A.

How do you quilt the quilt? by hand, by machine or just with ties?

I always think it is "done" when the top is done, but of course it takes 3 times as long to quilt as it does to piece the top.

Do you like the naturalistic blocks or the geometric ones?

If I ever finish this one, I will give it to one of my daughters.

Your nieces and nephews are lucky to be getting quilts from you.

I haven't posted on many of your threads, but I've read lots, and thoroughly enjoy your take on baking.

I had a round number b-day this year too; it's funny how we give them weight, isn't it? I like the "better than the alternative" attitude; I'm going to try to remember that every year!

Browndog, I would LOVE to have you come and eat cake with me - but it was shortbread! I made a batch and one cracked as I took it out of the pan so I had to taste it to be sure it was good. I took one to the New Year's party and it was all gone but a few crumbs. The kids should be back today and they are definitely out of the will! So nice to have greetings from the TFL family.
