A right sidebar! We have a right sidebar! Whoo hoo!
Ok, if you aren't a geek you probably don't care, but I think it is neat. If you are running at 1024x768 or less you won't see it, but that is ok because it isn't critical information. If you are running at a high resolution, it is an added bonus.
Of course it looks perfect in Safari and Firefox but a bit funky in IE. If you are still browsing in IE, I beseech you to download Firefox. Even non-techies find it a much nicer browser than IE.
The right sidebar gives me a good are to show off many of the beautiful things people have baked and posted to the site over the years. I'll be digging through the archives and adding more thumbnails into the rotation in the next few days. Not tomorrow though: jury duty.
I baked a miche tonight. Probably the prettiest I've baked yet. I'll try to get photos in the morning.

Good job, Floyd! This site is really looking snazzy!

I'd be happy to do some work on this for you (kind of low on contracts right now anyway). Let me know.

No - he didn't put it on the main page because over there a lot of stuff was going on already.
But since we had all these discussions about reading of actual posts and going with fixing a column width to make for less eye-roaming, it left all this blank space floating out on the side on the widescreen laptops we had so this seemed a nice visual fix to that.
And I really like that it's dynamic! Oops, there's Peter R. peeking at me!

I was on earlier and loved the look of the right side bar, but now the side bar isn't visible and I have the posts running off to the left. Example..above I see : the words Your Name..the "Your" is in the light brown, "name" is in the yellow and there is a line running vertically before "Your" and one before "name"..something wrong on my end?
ooh I see what you mean! that's kind of cool - disco stars! It seems to only happen if your mouse cursor is rolling over the stars. funky :)
I suspect he wont take too much time to figure that one out though, as it doesnt seem to affect the functionality.

on this page/comments page or on the front page?
I have seen that when there's threads with a whole bunch of comments, the sidebar moves off to the right off the screen more and more, so really active topics here the sidebar wont be visible I think.
Is it on all the pages you see it act weird? The problem with remote troubleshooting is we cant be sure we see what you do! I've been showing Floyd the site on my windows iE and Firefox (and am amazed at how ridiculously hard it is to make a page just look "the same" in them!) and he's been checking in his Mac but the more info the better!
I've been admiring the sidebar and am wondering how you have achieved the random selection of thumbnails (with titles) on it. Are you using a javascript that pulls up various divs? SSI??
The reason I ask is that I would like to encorporate something similar on one of the websites I maintain.

(I hope my question made sense.)
Thank you, Floyd;
I'll stare at php.net and array_rand to see if I can use that. (Have also copied the random book covers script to peruse.) Did you write the script? If so, and I end up using it, I'll be sure to place a credit in the coding I use.

Thank you, Floyd! That is most kind of you.

I had hubby download Firefox for me but I have to get used to it. I am going to be interested in the comparisons since so many people seem to favor it over IE. The problem right out of the gate is that my bookmarks, or at least some of the subfolders, did not import in total. Bummer, but hopefully we'll figure that out.
Also, I have noticed that now some fonts are strangely much larger or much smaller for instance the "thread title" which also shows the last posting time is much tinier. I run fairly high resolution (I think) so my stuff is smaller than normal anyway. I don't mind it, btw, it is just noticable.
I'm very adaptable though and hope to find what the better browser thing is. I don't have any problems with IE except for crashing all the time due to some weird Adobe flash error. (lol) Like that isn't a problem. It drives me nuts.
Oh, and also, Floyd if you see this I did just award a star in Firefox and it worked but it shimmied like your sister Kate. :o)
Well, I know it matters a lot to each person how their software functions. It is no small thing to me either and I always appreciate advances in technology. I must have the latest version of IE then because I have had great pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing and built in Google searches for months now. Maybe that is why I didn't notice such an improvement with Firefox. I like to keep an open mind though so will always try new things.
With the exception of that one font size your site looks exactly the same on my computer in both Firefox and IE.
