Can this starter still be saved?
Hi guys, I tried to go down the route of saving just a little starter after I used it. However I had forgotten to feed it, my bad. Can this still be saved?
I last used it almost forty hours ago. It has all dried up with the center looking odd. Smells yeasty.
I wouldn't even want to try
Thanks! Good thing I kept a backup in the fridge!
Yeah, unfortunately with a moldy food item (which is undoubtable what that is), even if you only see mold developing in one area it's pretty much already spread throughout the entire thing. The visible, colorful part of the mold is only the spores; the roots (mycelium) have already been established as a very fine web all throughout the food (it's why you should never just cut off the mold from bread, toss it or compost it!). Pic to get the point across:
Thank you for the input. I tossed it!
Unlike the previous two posters, I would indeed try. What have you got to lose? A bit of flour. If you do a couple of quick refreshes starting with a bit dug out from below the surfaces, you might well recover your starter.
There was really very little starter left in the jar. There's nothing I could dig out. The surface is the only layer ?
