I have been making this "recipe" since the mid 70's. I say recipe as that is what it was when I first saw it in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine. I have changed very little in all these many decades..why mess with perfection ! But the last few times I have made it, which is less often than in years past since we love our sourdoughs and I don't care for SD Challah, I have used some of my yeast water to lengthen the shelf life of the Challah. I have posted this revolutionary step here before. It is amazing what it does to the crumb and texture and fragrance. If you are familiar with Challah then you know that along with making it you either have a selection of recipes for using it after it is stale, which is at most 48 hrs , or you eat it all immediately :)
I added several large strips of fresh Minneola orange peel to my apple yeast water yesterday as I refreshed it. Wow....the fragrance was amazing. Today I decided to make my old standby Challah and added 1c of the newly refreshed and fragrant orange/apple yeast water in place of plain water. Oh my....the house smells of brioche/pogne de Romans ( which I make at holiday time). The taste is so rich without all the butter needed to make those other breads. If you would like the recipe...let me know. c
( not sure why the other pic keeps posting. I have tried 5 times to get it to post correctly. I am so tired of the inability to easily post pics as I used to be able to do. Will stop posting pics after today due to frustration )

invented by a dungeon loving dungeon master who hated the people dying in it and wanted them to suffer as long as possible:-) I have it down now but still get pissed off when my posts go missing for no reason.
I put YW in my Challah too, and the old YW fruits too, and bake it in a pan with no braids :-) Wish I could ride a bike like you though......
Well done and happy baking
I never had trouble till I stopped using Photobucket and started using the " tree". It is horrible !! Awful !! Dumb !! It took 5 tries to get the pic to post in the header...then the old bread pic in a round pan showed up for NO reason !! Arrrgh !! So ignore it.
I hate the fruit in the YW...one time I ate one piece...cause you said you used it...aaaack...tastes bad LOL !! So it is in the compost when I take all of it out to add new every week to 10 days. I only use Granny Smith apple cores now...works a treat as they say. Lasts a LONG time and the fiz is greater. I think it could be because of the more acid apple. I use a fancy schmantzy apple corer thing that leaves a good amount of apple. Give it a try and see what you think.
You could ride a bike a long ways if you wanted to...we have decided to stay home and rest up for a bit...come August will head out again for parts unknown...c
it shows a different picture from the one here. I think changing the file name then uploading it again will solve the problem. Many times it has happened to me and that's what I do up to now in case it happens again. I've always used the tree icon too and I'm crazy for pics in my posts! You will get used to it too eventually.
Nice crust and crumb! Looks so soft and fluffy. Won't the orange peel make the YW bitter?
as far as I know there isn't a file that is wrong...have no idea how to fix...will try what Ian suggests below. The Challah is still great this AM. To answer about the orange peel , I only left it in overnight and then tossed it. The AYW is still very fragrant and as far as I can tell not bitter at all. I don't think I would leave it longer though. I am going to try using some of the fruit from an orange and see what happens. Thank you for looking ! c
Nice bake. I haven't made a Challah in a while and I do remember when I used YW it came out real good. It's fun experimenting with YW. On one of the FB groups I belong to a bunch of people are using all kinds of interesting things to make it including flowers and someone even made one with grapes and then used red wine instead of water to keep it going. The wine one really sounds worth trying.
As far as the pictures go, I'm lucky as I do my posts on my Wordpress blog and then I just cut and paste it, photos and all into TFL and it works perfectly. Wordpress is very easy to use and give you more control over your content.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your post.
Regards,
Ian
I have a wordpress account now but so far have failed at making it look like I want. The paragraph feature doesn't seem to work for me...I get one long run on sentence. I am SO not technically inclined so I will try a bit more and see what happens. At least it is easy to get a picture to show there :) Thank you Ian and look forward so seeing more of your posts. c
