Welcome to TFL. It is a great resource with lots of very experienced bakers who willingly share their knowledge and experience. You will see that a lot of users are from the US & Canada but there are also quite a few of us in the UK (I am in Shropshire) so we can offer help as well as advice on where to source baking supplies in the UK.
I saw your post about sourdough and, as I'm sure you are aware, "proper" sourdough starters/ferments are made without the use of commercial yeasts. There are many ways to do this and there is a great deal of advice on TFL if you want to go without commercial yeast and make your own starter. Personally, I used the method set out in Richard Bertinet's book "Crust". (Richard is French but runs a bakery/cooking school in Bath). It worked first time for me and my starter is not far off its second birthday.
Whether you use commercial yeast, a homemade starter or any combination thereof, I hope you enjoy your baking and being a member of TFL.

thanks for you advice - I have made starter without commercial yeast but have never managed to keep it for 2 years !!! Is the recipe on here or do I need to buy the book??
I will enjoy my baking and think this site is going to be a fantastic resource

Hi and welcome. It's nice to know someone else from Cornwall on the site - I'm in Par. Only been baking bread 15 mths or so, but nearly everything I learned came from this site! Hope you find it informative. Re sourdough starter - I followed the 'pineapple juice starter' http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/233 - except I used orange juice as that's all I had, worked like a dream!
Hi - thanks for the welcome - glad there's someone else down here too.I've "dabbled" with bread making for ages - hubby is a chef so have learned a lot from him but really enjoy baking.Will give the juice started a try - off to Lisbon in a couple of days so will give it a go when we get back
