New availability of Russian Fermented Red Rye Malt (ржаной солод для жителей США)
I just was able to order two packages of Russian fermented red rye malt after looking all over. It has been hard to find for residents of the United States. I first saw it last week on the gastronomusa.com website but it was listed as out of stock. So, I phoned the store and asked them when they would have it. They asked if I wanted liquid or dry and they told me to wait for the weekend for dry. I just found it and ordered two packages.
Not cheap but a much better deal than the ridiculous prices on Ebay. Each package of Pudov brand 300 gr. costs $4.50, but the the delivery charge is another $3.80 each for the two I ordered. So, I wound up paying a total of $8.30 for each 300 gr package, a bit over 10 ounces each. By the way, when this was available near my house several years ago, I paid $6 for each package and, of course, no shipping charge. So, I'm actually paying only $2 more per package now. I'm not sure what the shipping charge would be if I only ordered one, but I assume it's a better deal to get two or maybe more.
The website offers a choice of English or Russian. Just go to https://gastronomusa.com/
I paid the crazy ebay price for my first sample.
With shipping that is almost half what I paid on ebay.
That is a great price!
I hope they will order the traditional Russian bread pans too.
Ebay prices for those are very high too,
That would be nice. If you order 8-10 of the L7 pans from Ukraine the price comes down to about $10 ea. So I organized a "group buy" of them in our local Nextdoor baking forum. 500 members, and got zero interest! Sigh... I couldn't believe it! So I bit the bullet and ordered a couple. They're excellent pans. Would have preferred the slightly larger L6 but they were even more $$...
I'm using the Lodge cast iron. It works very well as long as I grease it with a very thin layer of vegetable oil and lecithin. It's the same length and width as the L7; only the height is shorter. Since I usually use 300 grams of flour and it doesn't reach the top anyway, the L7 would not make a difference, except for the difference between cast aluminum and cast iron. The cheapest L7 I found is $15 plus $10 for mail order from stpgoods.com. I'd try one if it were cheaper.
Thanks for posting this. On Sunday night I ordered three bags of the fermented red rye malt (aka Solod), and they just arrived (Tuesday afternoon -- less than 48 hours after being ordered) via FedEx. Pretty nice.
Funny, I ordered it before posting my message and I haven't received mine yet. It's supposed to come tomorrow (Wed.). Maybe I live farther from the store than you. I should have gotten a discount since I gave them free advertising here!
I live in Connecticut, so the delivery from Brooklyn was not lengthy. Did your order arrive?
Yes, I got it today plus a free candy bar.
Thanks for asking.
