Hi!

My name is Rob.  New member and very new to baking.   Got interested in baking bread after my wife brought me a wood burning pizza oven which prompted me to try making pizza dough without out any success,  So, I began to explore the subject and began reading everything I could on pizza dough and bread making in general.  By training, retired Dentist, I come from the school of Read it, See it, Do it.   Well fast forward to do it, made more than many door stops with an occasional decent enough(edible loaf) and am slowly learning

Welcome to a great community here at TFL.

Boy, your story sounds familiar. I started my bread journey about a dozen years ago and started from a basis of learning at my mothers side. When all I could produce were bricks, I started REALLY remembering my Mom's bread and talking to siblings. All she made (except occasionally) were some tasty semi-bricks. I decided I'd have to UN-learn everything I learned first and started from there. I'm happy with where I'm at now but not as expert as many here.

Speaking of here... best site-ever. If you have a question/need there is always help available. Use the search box first, though, as there is about 15 yrs worth of knowledge here on any subject you can imagine breadwise.

So welcome and have some delicious fun!

One problem we have in writing about bread techniques and methods is that we can't be there to guide you in person.  Something that is actually simple and we could show you if we were together can be hard to explain, especially the variables and exceptions.

I'm not a dentist, but I bet that back at the start of your career you had to learn how to smooth the surface of an amalgam filling.  I'm sure there's a knack to it, and even more so when you have to avoid putting too much pressure on the patient's lip. If someone could model the instrument placement and angles it would help a lot [if this example isn't realistic I hope you will forgive me!]

So please be patient when we try to express things that may not really be complicated in person.
