Sourcing (affordable) grain in South Australia

Hi,

I’d love to buy a grain mill but first I want to find reliable and affordable sources of wheat grain in Adelaide, South Australia.
The cheapest I’ve found so far is $2.60 per kg at a Greek food retailer and wholesaler. “clean wheat” of unspecified variety. Organic wheat can cost as much as $6.90.
For reference, plain flour here is $1.10 per kg, and strong flour is about $1.60. Wholemeal flour is $3.60.
I understand that freshly milled flour will be superior to all these options, but in theory bulk wheat should be significantly cheaper than what I’ve found so far, and I’d really love for the mill to be economical.

thanks!

No clues to your name or location  in your user details but im in WA

and have managed to get some wheat direct from farmers that have been particularly generous with samples of their wheats to try. for home milling

an interesting link below . you could try putting in a request on gumtree  for local framers interested in selling wheat direct.

take a look at https://www.safarmer.com.au

and you might be able to contact individuals that feature in their reports  or they may be able to give you contacts

Zac even try contacting the big boys in grain corporations they often have a support or field officer and may be able to  put you into contact with some local farmers. We did that for gavinc in Victoria and he now has a couple of contacts for buying his grain for home milling. Do a search gavinc im pretty sure he has posted on TFL his quest to get wheat (red  in particular)

here are a coUple more links that may generate some contacts for you

Business wise they are dealing in big tonnes but  still might know of small producers. another thought is ag shows and especially royal shows where they often have district displays of produce. you can also visit receiving silos and bins plenty of farmers dropping off their grain there. keep us posted how you get on..

Before you buy your mill see if you can find someone near you that might already be doing milling and may even have contacts  try seeing if you have any local bread groups  or put something up of facebook or gumtree that you are seeking grain or someone thats home milling  you may get lucky.

Has anyone found corn/maize kernels for milling in Oz? I've gone through all the links above and it seems to be far less available than in NA.
