Where can I get flour online in the US?

Hi Everybody,

Just some background: I live in an area with little variety at the grocery and I spent an unreasonable amount of effort to NOT find rye or pumpernickel flour. I am pretty new to bread baking, so I want to explore different grains and learn more about what a quality flour is like verses a flour that is poo poo. I've only really tried the few brands available in pretty much any chain grocery on the east coast. For my daily breads, I use King Arthur and Bob's Red Mill flours, but I have nothing to compare them with in terms of quality.

Here's my questions for ya:

Where should I buy flour from online?

What brand(s) do you recommend for daily basic breads (something affordable) and for rye bread?

Thanks for your help!!

Aside from the King Arthur that I buy in the store, I had a good experience getting some flour from Barton Springs Mill.  So far only bags of emmer and rye, but I liked the flours as well as the service.  Packaged nicely and delivered quickly.

And order from Baker’s Authority (dark/medium/light rye, first clear, durum, pumpernickel) and Janie’s Mill (cracked rye, rye berries).

Baker’s Authority has some bad reviews online but I have not had any bad experiences. Prices are reasonable and orders arrive quickly.

I have purchased rye flour from Breadtopia (whole and bolted) and Country Life Natural Foods (CLNF) and rye chops from Jainie's Mill. I'm in the Midwest, so these sources have reasonable shipping for me. I have used Bob's Red Mill dark (whole) rye and King Arthur medium rye. I have liked all these rye flours. I have had a good recommendation of Castle Valley Mill in Pennsylvania, which might have better shipping rates to VA (free for >$40 orders)..

I have used Wheat Montana's Bronze Chief whole wheat flour and really liked the flavor. I purchased it through CLNF, but I believe it may be available at Walmart.

See if they have what you want and if there is a Delivery Drop near you (then there is no delivery charge with a min order amount).

If you're in the Northeast, you might be able to find Farmer Ground Flour -- http://www.farmergroundflour.com/retail/wholesale. In my experience their rye and spelt are great.

You will also find many good options at Guistos for rye as well as patent and whole grain flours.  They also sell some un-milled whole grain if you are a home miller.  They provide both single package and "case" quantities.  It is in South San Francisco, California so if you are not on the west coast you will want to check shipping costs.

Best of luck
