Help me find a recipe?
I was recently visited by memories of when I was a kid going on a picnic with my mom and young siblings and taking along this bread that had whole sausages and eggs woven into it. It was in the form of a crown, possibly braided, and the center had a hidden (?) pocket of cheese. I also seem to remember olives being part of the decoration, but these memories are fuzzy. I asked my mom about it recently, but while she remembers it, she doesn't remember it's name. She knows she got it from a bread book from the library sometime mid-90s. I've looked and looked online, but can only find things like sweet Italian Easter bread (our eggs were not colored) and Casatiello (our bread had whole sausages, but I don't think anything was kneaded into the dough itself). I think the dough was merely a place-holder and vehicle for the whole eggs and sausage and cheese. I've also looked at the libraries near me to see if they have any bread books from that time period, but all of them seem to be about bread machines.
Does anyone out there know about a bread like this? I'd love to try my hand at making something like this for my kids. Maybe we'd take it on a picnic like the one I remember so long ago.
Thanks in advance!
