San Diego Fresh Loavers Get Together?
Hi all,
I've been lurking on this site for a while, and this is my first post.
My name is Boaz, and I live in San Diego. I've been baking for a little more than a year.
Are there any other San Diego bakers here? Anyone care to meet?
Boaz
I'm the North Park representative in San Diego. hee hee
There are others here from SD. Speak up, everyone!
Sue
Hello Boaz.
I, too, am new to this board. I reside in Chula Vista (Eastlake). I've been baking same-day bread for a few years but will be trying my first sponge tonight.
Does anybody know where to get King Arthur Organic AP flour (or rye) around here? I see Henry's has organic AP and will be starting with that.
Anybody going to see Peter Reinhart in Carlsbad in February? Maybe we can meet and represent the fresh 'loafers'.
-Kurt
But unfortunately February is going to be a big crunch time at work, meaning very long hours.
Anyhow, I was hoping that maybe San Diego bakers could meet before that. I was thinking along the lines of maybe this Sunday, or Saturday December 8. (After that I will be out of town for the rest of the month).
I have never met other bakers, and I thought this could be fun!
As for KA organic flour: I saw some in Jimbo's Del Mar at one point. Also, some of the higher end Ralphs stores carry KA flours.
Boaz
To follow Sue's lead, I'm the Kensington rep. Give me a week to get over this #*!)$@ cold, and I'll meet. We could get together at the Library Park in Kensington on Adams Ave, then walk to one of the nearby coffee shops. Sue is over this way frequently. Or maybe in Balboa Park. Just suggestions, though, I'm open.
Susan from San Diego
So I suggest Saturday, December 8. I like your suggestion of meeting at the Library park. Could you post driving directions?
What time is good for people? I am busy on the evening of December 8, so I hope we can meet in the morning/noon.
Looking forward to this!
Boaz
San Diego-ites,
We are taking our son to an Xmas parade that day. May I suggest waiting until after the holidays? I feel the acceleration of time and related committments already...aaauuggghh!
Sue
I'm sorry that you cannot come on the 8th, Sue. I'd still like to have the Dec 8 meeting, and then maybe a meeting after the holidays as well?
...sounds good in theory. Hope there're no parking meters.
-Kurt
I hope you don't mind that I changed the title of this thread so it'll catch more eyeballs.
If the 8th it is, I'll put something sticky on the front page until then. Just let me know.
In honor of both Tolkien and our hard work, shouldn't that be "Loavers" rather than "Loafers"??
sPh
True, true.
I fixed it.
How about 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Library Park on Adams Avenue in Kensington? We can meet then, and again following the holidays, perhaps in another location.
From Highway 15, exit on Adams Avenue, head East, you will see the little park on the right with the Library sitting in the middle of it. Children's playground to the left. We will meet in the open space to the right of the Library. No parking meters yet!
Susan from San Diego
Floyd, could you put a sticky on the front page? Dec. 8, 1 PM is official!
You bet. Here is a map:

If it's raining on Saturday at 1 p.m., I'll be waiting in the library, and will be holding a copy of Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads.
Susan from San Diego
Rain? In San Diego? Nahhh.
I'll be the guy with the forest green Bavarian fedora - on my head or in my hand depending on the venue (park vs library).
-Kurt
And I will be carrying some origami (paper folded) thing. (That's my other hobby)
I'll be frizzy and damp from having watched a Christmas parade with our three-year-old son.
Sue
We had a great time chatting about bread, and encourage all you folk to do the same: get together and enjoy yourselves talking about what we love.
Drum roll, please-- Hahahahahahahaha!
