Going to San Francisco...

I'll be in the Bay Area for a week on vacation.  Where should I go? Bakeries? Flour mill?  I'd like to buy some starter and see a real San Francisco bakery.

Thanks in advance

one fine baker of all kinds of breads and mills his own flour in site as the name suggests.  He sells one piece if toast for $4 and has 6 toasters going at once and can hardly keep up! Check his website for his famous Pizza Nights too.  This why and how I make bread.

Can't be a bread enthusiast who makes a trip to SF without checking out Tartine in the Mission neighborhood! There are often lines, so be prepared to wait (the joke is that San Franciscans love waiting in line, so you'll be getting great bread AND having an authentic SF experience).

I am not a huge fan of The Mill cafe (the toast is nothing special and they attract the worst kind of bougie San Franciscans) but the flour they sell is nice. If you're interested in checking out the whole artisanal toast thing, Trouble in the Sunset neighborhood is where it all started. Couple it with a trip to Golden Gate Park or Ocean beach, though, as it's a bit of a hike. Homage in downtown also has tasty avocado toast, if paying $7 for bread with lime and avocados is your thing.

Visiting Boudin Bakery at Fisherman's Wharf can be fun. You can tour the bakery, eat in the restaurant and buy bread in the shop. The fancy bread shapes are quite amazing! You can also buy sourdough. It's more of a commercial operation than an artisan shop, but the history is very interesting and it's cool to see the machine that zooms little lumps of dough into the boules for the sourdough bread bowls. :)

Small bakery but the food is good. I love San Francisco. Great food and character.

I'm going there in March and I'll be checking out Tartine and the Tartine Manufactory, which is a much bigger space about a mile down the road from Tartine And has some different things.
