Stop SPAM

It seems we are getting more and more spam in the forums. Just now I found some by haohao. When I looked up this user I noticed they had only been a member for about 20 minutes, so accounts are being created for the sole purpose of posting spam. Can we change drupal to require moderator approval before users are completely registered. That, it seems, would discourage a large amount of the spam.

We could, but how would that make a difference? The moderator would approve the account and then they'd start spamming.
It isn't possible to have an open, easy to join online group without having a certain amount of spam. I'm not willing to make it much harder to join or else we'll lose the openness here.
I don't believe that we are getting more and more spam. If anything, we are getting less than we were a couple of months ago.
When you see a spammer, just drop me an email with their screen name and where they are spamming and I will take care of them. Also hit the minus sign below their comment. If enough people do that, it will disappear.
