New from SF

Hi!  I am new to this site and am a sourdough home baker in San Francisco.  I would love to connect with other local home bakers and share ideas.

Thanks!

Michelle

Hi Michelle, I think there are lots of us Bay Area folks on here. I'm across in the East Bay. I know Berkeleyite Michael Pollan spent some time on here when he was researching his most recent book, don't know if he still comes around. I've often thought it would be fun to have a freshloaf meetup IRL, as the kids say -Matt

Welcome!

A meetup would be pretty awesome, I think.  There are plenty bay area people on this forum, I'm also in east bay.

Michelle,

I also live in the east bay.  A meet-up would be fun.

Hey Michelle,

I'm also based in the East Bay. I'd be interested in a meetup too--always good to connect with other bread geeks :)

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the welcome!  I am in SF, but would love to meet up.

Hi, Michelle.

I am not in the Bay Area (physically), but in the San Joaquin Valley.

Tell us something about the breads you like to make and the kinds of ideas you would like to share.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for the message.  I usually make a sourdough with about 70% white, 30% wheat, but I have done a lot of different combinations.  I started my starter about 2 years ago and have been baking pretty consistently ever since.  Some things I would like to discuss are different percentages of flours people use, hydration levels, fermentation times.  It would also be great to meet to share bread.

It is easy to start a new topic. Your questions would be of interest to a lot of the members, I bet. Ask them.

I'll refrain from answering here, in your self-introducing topic, but I'll look for one you create for discussion of those good questions.

Glad to see there is so much interest in some kind of meetup. Anyone want to volunteer to make this a reality??

My college alumni group had a group tour of Semifreddi's a couple months ago. I wanted to go but couldn't make it. Arranging those kinds of "behind the scenes" tours might be fun. Or we could just get together and eat each others' bread.

the UK in June and will be in SF for for 4 days around the 10th.  I'm neeting him in LA but may change my plans if SF is a better get together

Welcome from Arizona.  You have found the place where all things bread are nearly known and discussed with passion:-)

I'd certainly come to SF to meet you.

I think that'd be a great time for a get-together! I wonder if Tartine or Josey Baker would let us tour...

Hi baybakin. Since you're into wine, do you have any recommendations for wineries to visit?

Cheers,
Michael

Hi mwilson,

That really depends on what style you enjoy, and what kind of experience you're looking for.  Hard to argue with any winery from this list: http://www.intowine.com/napa-valley%E2%80%99s-top-ten-best-kept-secret-wineries?page=0,0 The first one in particular is stunning, but that might be partially because of my Architectural background.

Beer is another story, and I could send you to a few pretty awesome beer cellars and breweries in SF proper, you just have to ask (I've got a good list of cocktail bars too)

I'm leaving LA on the 10th and I would like to at least stop at a few wine hot-spots on the way to SF.

How about Saturday the 11th in SF. Maybe even Sunday the 12th?? Let's make this happen...

How's that for you dabrownman?

I'm not having NCBB surgery until at least the the 20th after laser surgery tomorrow.  Fits right in.   I'll have to check into an RV rental so I can bring the Harem from AZ  and see some of the sites on the way.  We still might meet up in LA.  Lucy loves the drive up the CA coast on the 101.

I vote for a Josey Baker tour.  Better yet,  I vote for a Tartine Tour and  vote for a Fresh Lofian takeover of The Mill:-)

Happy baking

What is NCBB? Hope you're okay.

I went to Tartine last weekend for morning buns (best pasty on the planet), and they had no bread for sale, save a puny half loaf of what was apparently Rene's Rye. It was slightly disillusioning since I had just made it the weekend before, and had no perceptible rise during fermentation, yet mine looked much more impressive.

I'd love to go to Josey Baker, and I'm always  up for Tartine. Note, very long lines and difficulty parking near Tartine.

don't even know they have but many on TFL have it quite badly.  Neurotic Compulsive Bread Baking . It is said that Beer, Wine, Spirits, Ice Cream, BBQ, Chocolates, Cookies, Cake. Pastries and especailly Pie can moderate its debilitating effects.....but only if taken in large quantities every day:-)

I have that very condition. If only there were some sort of support network ...

Wine stop-offs on 101, check out some places in Paso Robles, great for a Zinfindel (Primativo, and not "white zin," that terrible stuff).  About 3 hours south of SF (3-4 hours north of LA).

Thanks baybakin. The Lady I'm staying with in LA recommended Paso Robles to me knowing that I am very fond of Zinfandel. No need to warn me of the white zin. I'm well aware of this cheap bottom shelf offering suitable only for unsophisticated ladies!

My favourite wine of all time is the Primitivo riserva anniversario 62 from San Marzano in Puglia. Hoping to find something as good if not better in California...

Sylvester is the one who taught me how to start and run businesses,  He wanted to buy my design build construction business but I wouldn't sell it so he bought me instead by making me an offer I could not refuse.  He told me if I stayed with him for 4 years I would learn everything I ever needed to know about anything worth knowing.  What he didn't tell me is that would learn all the stuff you shouldn't know too:-).

I worked for him for 5 years from 1987 to 1991 when he sold Deli Products International to The French, Society de Caves and eventually to the Irish Dairy Board.  He kept Peacock Cheese to give to Sylvia - She was very nice.  I started out being involved in his personal and business real estate but eventually got into the food business with him and was General Manager of the Plant in Denver when he sold out and I became Corporate Director of Operations for the group.  We eventually built the business into a billion dollar one from less than 100, million before I retired at 55.

Those 5 years we flew around the country ib his private jet buying up food distributors.  I would expand the facilities and he would bring in the product lines.  Those were the best 5 years of my life and Sylvester is my hero in more ways than 1.  I bought some of the first winery equipment we used make the first rot gut wines:-)  I also developed the other 8 350 acre each ranches he owned in CA and got them ready to sell as half acre lots making Sylvester one of the richest men I have ever met.

I remodeled and put an new roof on Sylvia's and Walters house in Malibu that Sylvester gave them when they got married and I also got to plant grapes and pistachios at Paso Robles before it became a winery and we just grew grapes for others.

I owe Sylvester a lot so I might be biased.   When he is gone I will write a book about him because we can't ever forget a man like that.

I will be in the bay area the week of June 19, after my appointments at the radiation salon for "ca" treatments are finished. I'll be teaching my cousin and another buddy to bake, as well as another private meet-up. Sounds like I'll have missed everyone.

I want to try the Thorough Bakery. I visited several others back in 2013.

A visit to Josey Baker's is well worth it. It's a little off the beaten path. From Castro & Market take the 24 Divisadero bus north to 736 Divisadero between Grove & Fulton.

A truly San Francisco experience is when a trolley pole comes off the overhead wire and the driver has to get out to re-engage it.

If you happen to pass through Church & Market on your way to Castro, you could also make a quick stop at Thorough bakery, 248 Church.

All,

It appears that June 11 or 12 in SF is the most suitable date for a meetup.  I won't be able to make it that weekend due to family visiting from out of town.  Someone here should take the reins and establish the final time and place, and then broadcast it on the main page, as other TFLers will likely want to join.
